Agentic AI for Artists, workshop

I have a pleasure to invite you to the workshop Agentic AI for Artists, on the 26th of October 2024 (Saturday), at Prachtsaal (Berlin Neukölln). The workshop will be conducted by me (Kazik Pogoda), with support from Julia Thomas, mothers of xemantic, a collective of applied philosophy.

We believe that coding AI agents should be as easy as possible. In the Creative Code Berlin community, we are teaching artists, often without prior programming experience, how to express their creations through code as a medium. For this purpose we use creative coding environments like Processing, p5.js, or OPENRNDR. I developed a set of AI assistants and development tools intended to be equally accessible, so that creators of all kinds can turn their own machines into an outside window, through which, the AI system can perceive our world, values and needs, and act upon this information.

Preconditions before attending the workshop

You should bring your computer. :)

The programming knowledge is not absolutely necessary to participate in this workshop, especially the first part introducing tools and the theory, however rudimentary coding skills can be useful in general.

The experience with conversational AI is not required, but helpful. People interested in learning or refreshing knowledge and vocabulary related to this part, are strongly advised to come to the workshop starting from 10:00. If you feel familiar with the topic, then it is OK to come at 11:00.

We will help you set up everything during the workshop, however we are going to use Anthropic API directly, and it's a paid service. You should preferably purchase API tokens before the workshop, and the minimal amount is $5, which should be more than sufficient for the workshop. Note: API use tokens are a different product than conversational Claude AI interface.

Workshop agenda

• 10:00–10:50 — The first hour is reserved as an introduction to conversational AI assistants for people without prior experience, to learn basic prompting, if you feel confident in this topic, you can come at 11:00.
• 11:00–11:55 — We will talk about safety precautions. Creating a virtual machine, or a separate user account is advised. We start by ensuring access to all the APIs and installing all the required software: IntelliJ IDE, Claudine, and setting up our computers.
• 12:00–13:00 — An introduction to Claudine and trying different use cases.
• 13:00–14:00 — Launch break.
• 14:00–15:00 — How to program a simple "hello world" AI agent which can use tools, and be integrated with a media art installation.
• 15:00–16:00 — Expanding our agents, and writing system prompts for creative purposes.
• 16:00–17:00 — We can collaborate creating AI based conceptual artwork attempting to understand the context, operating on meanings and performing reasoning process.

Note: this is the first workshop of this kind we are preparing, therefore we are still figuring out what works and what does not work in such a formula. The agenda is more informational than strict, but it covers the overall plan.

Software and services used during the workshop

• Claude AI — conversational AI
• Anthropic API — Anthropic is the mother company of Claude AI model. Using their API directly allows to create own flavors of Claude, and also achieve much more thanks to use of tools, which we are going to explore during the workshop.
• Supported Operating Systems: Linux, macOS, Windows
• IntelliJ IDEA — the programming environment (IDE) which works the best with Kotlin, the implementation language of Claudine and OPENRNDR. (the open source Community Edition of IntelliJ IDEA is good enough)
• Java Development Kit suitable version comes with IntelliJ IDEA software.
• git — distributed version control system there is a chance that you already have it in your system. If not we will help you with the installation.
• Having a GitHub account is highly recommended, but not necessary.
• anthropic-sdk-kotlin — An unofficial version of Anthropic SDK is used by Claudine. Your custom agents will be built on top of this library.
• claudine — the AI agent managing your computer.
• claude-ai-artist — a template project for your creative experimentation with artistic use of AI agents.
• OPENRNDR — a creative coding framework based on Kotlin, the base for many examples in claude-ai-artist.
